The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, announced today his administration’s plan to eliminate the operation of tricycles, commonly known as Keke Napep, in specific areas of Abuja. Wike revealed that the ban would be enforced in the upscale neighborhoods of Asokoro and Maitama.
Addressing Estate Developers and Residents’ Associations in the Federal Capital Territory, Wike expressed his determination to tackle the long-standing issue of one-chance crimes in the nation’s capital. He assured residents that the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) would introduce buses and taxis to replace Keke Napep, providing a more secure and efficient mode of transportation.
Wike emphasized the connection between some Keke Napep operators and criminal elements, stating, “Some of these Keke Napep are agents of criminals.” He stressed the importance of the new transportation alternatives, asserting that the buses and taxis would cover all routes in Asokoro and Maitama.
The former Governor of Rivers State acknowledged the inconvenience the transition might cause but emphasized its necessity for the greater good. “It is painful, but it’s an inconvenience that we must face,” Wike added, urging residents to cooperate with the FCDA by fulfilling their tax obligations.
