The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Olalekan Balogun, has taken the decision to suspend Alhaji Haruna Maiyasin, the Sarki Sasa in the Ibadan area of Oyo State. The suspension comes as a result of allegations of insubordination and disrespect towards the traditional authorities.
Alhaji Maiyasin was suspended during a meeting held by the Hausa community in the state. The meeting was headed by the Seriki Hausawa of Ibadanland, Alhaji Ali Zungeru. Allegations were made against Alhaji Maiyasin including the unlawful award of chieftaincy titles without consultation with the Sarki Hausawa of Ibadanland. The suspension order will remain in place until a decision is reached by the Arewa Community Council in Ibadan.
Alhaji Maiyasin has been the District Head of the Sasa area since 1983 when he was appointed by the Olubadan’s elder brother, Shuaibu Dikko III. The position of District Head was created to maintain peace and justice among the Hausa community in the Sasa area. However, concerns have been raised that Alhaji Maiyasin’s continued stay in the role could lead to a crisis in the area. Instances of intra and inter-communal conflicts in Sabo-Sagamu, Sabo-Ile-Ife, and most recently in Sasa have influenced the decision to suspend Alhaji Maiyasin in order to prevent further clashes.
The Seriki Hausawa of Ibadanland, Alhaji Ali Zungeru, explained that the suspension of Alhaji Maiyasin was necessary to avoid any potential conflict. The decision was made collectively by the Arewa traditional institutions in Ibadan. The allegations against Alhaji Maiyasin include insubordination towards the Olubadan of Ibadanland and the unauthorized granting of Chieftaincy titles without consultation with the Sarki Hausawa of Ibadanland. The suspension will remain in effect until the Arewa Community Council in Ibadan reaches a final decision.
