The Coalition of Northern Groups has issued a stern warning against the ongoing selection process for leadership positions in the upcoming 10th National Assembly. Expressing perplexity and concern, the coalition highlights the alleged attempts by certain interest groups within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to impose Godswill Akpabio as the Senate President, disregarding democratic principles. This move, according to the coalition, has the potential to create divisions and conflicts among different regions of the country, including the North.
During a media address in Abuja, the Northern Group urged the party leadership to uphold constitutionalism and fairness by allowing democratic elections within its ranks. They emphasize the importance of transparency and the adherence to democratic processes in the selection of leadership positions, to ensure unity and the representation of diverse interests.
The APC’s National Working Committee (NWC) recently adopted Godswill Akpabio (South-South) and Barau Jibrin (North-West) as the favored candidates for Senate President and Deputy Senate President, respectively. However, these decisions have generated ripples among political gladiators, prompting concerns about the imposition of candidates without broader consultation and consensus.
