The Lagos State Police Command has initiated an investigation into an alleged assault on a man, known only as Big Cashy, and his companion by police officers near the Abattoir in the state’s Oko Oba region. The investigation was launched after a video of the incident went viral on social media.
SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the state police public relations officer, confirmed the investigation to reporters on Thursday, stating that an investigation had begun but declined to provide further details.
According to Big Cashy, he and his companions were traveling to a nearby location when the police stopped their car for a search on Wednesday. When the policemen asked for their phones, they refused to hand them over, and the situation escalated, resulting in the alleged assault.
In a tweet under the account @cashy0206, Big Cashy wrote, “No drugs, nothing, no evidence, why asking for phone for no reason?” and expressed concern over the abuse of power by police officers.
Bamigbose Kabiru and Toheeb Bakare were identified as the victims of the assault, according to Hundeyin, who stated that they were accosted for driving a Lexus ES350 against the flow of traffic on the Old Abeokuta Road in Agege.
While investigations into the case are ongoing, Hundeyin assured the public that those found responsible for the assault would face consequences.
