The Lagos State Government inaugurated the Oyingbo Overpass Bridge as part of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit Red Line. This bridge, the second of four, is intended to enhance safety and the flow of vehicular traffic along the Red Line. The project was undertaken by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA). The opening of the bridge came just three days after the inauguration of the Yaba Flyover, another key infrastructure of the Red Line. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the Oyingbo Flyover will reduce traffic congestion and delays while eliminating interference between pedestrians, vehicles, and trains. He stated that the investment in the bridge will enhance the flow of traffic and improve the quality of life for residents.
The Oyingbo Flyover connects Lagos Island and Mainland, rising from Murtala Mohammed Way in Ebute Metta and leading to Iddo and Costain arterial roads. Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the infrastructure is strategically located to achieve a seamless integrated intermodal transport system. The opening of the bridge is timely given the maintenance work on the Third Mainland Bridge, which has resulted in closures and the need for alternative routes to Lagos Island. Sanwo-Olu also warned against illegal activities, such as trading, under the bridge.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, stated that the bridge is in line with the governor’s THEMES Plus Agenda, which aims to develop an integrated transportation master plan to make Lagos a competitive city. The Managing Director of LAMATA, Mrs Abimbola Akinajo, commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for his commitment to completing the Red Line infrastructure on time. The Chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Government Area, Mrs Omolola Essien, described the bridge as a symbol of progress for residents and promised to prevent illegal trading and preserve the infrastructure.
Overall, the opening of the Oyingbo Overpass Bridge in Lagos is part of the government’s efforts to improve transportation infrastructure and enhance the flow of vehicular traffic. The bridge serves as a vital connection between Lagos Island and Mainland, providing alternative routes during maintenance work on the Third Mainland Bridge. The project aims to reduce congestion, improve safety, and enhance the quality of life for residents. The government also emphasized its commitment to supporting local engineering expertise and providing opportunities for skill transfer and development.
