Chinese President Xi Jinping reassured American executives at a dinner on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in San Francisco, expressing China’s readiness to be a partner and friend to the United States. The event aimed to strengthen relations between the two largest economies, following talks between President Xi and US President Joe Biden.
In his speech, President Xi emphasized the importance of cooperation between China and the US, urging against viewing China as a threat. He stated, “Whatever stage of development it may reach, China will never pursue hegemony or expansion, and will never impose its will on others.” President Xi also addressed the fentanyl crisis, expressing sympathy and highlighting the agreement reached with the US to curb fentanyl production in earlier talks.
The high-security dinner drew nearly 400 attendees, including business and government officials, academics, and prominent figures from US corporate giants like Apple, BlackRock, Broadcom, Bridgewater Associates, and Pfizer. The courses served reflected a diverse menu, including a seasonal vegetable salad, coffee crusted black angus flat iron steak or a vegetable curry with squash and rice, a fruit tart, and wine.
The event provided a platform for US companies to directly engage with China’s leader amid challenges posed by China’s economic slowdown, the US push to “de-risk” some American supply chains away from China, and uncertainty caused by China’s expanding security rules. Among the attendees were US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and other US officials.
